Connecting to RDP through a VPN
Answer in brief
Turn on the VPN on your own device, then open Remote Desktop as usual. The host and the Windows event log then record the VPN’s IP instead of yours.
What it hides
Your home or office IP from the RDP host and from the server’s own login logs. It does not change the IP that websites see when you browse from inside the RDP: that is always the server’s.
How
- Connect your VPN on your computer or phone
- Open the Remote Desktop app and enter the server IP, user and password
- If the connection drops, pick a VPN location close to the server
Latency
Every hop adds delay. A VPN exit in the same region as the server keeps the desktop responsive; one on another continent makes typing feel slow.
